What Is Baccarat?

Baccarat is a card game that has been played in European casinos since the 15th century and is now one of the most popular table games globally, particularly in Asia. Despite its reputation as a "high-roller" game, baccarat is actually remarkably simple — you don't need skill or strategy to play. There are only three possible outcomes on each round: the Player wins, the Banker wins, or it's a Tie.

Your job as a player is simply to bet on which outcome will occur before the cards are dealt.

How a Round of Baccarat Works

  1. Two cards are dealt face-up to both the "Player" hand and the "Banker" hand
  2. Card values: 2–9 = face value; 10, J, Q, K = 0 points; Ace = 1 point
  3. Only the last digit of the total counts — so a hand of 7 + 8 = 15 = 5 points
  4. The hand closest to 9 wins
  5. A third card may be drawn for either hand based on fixed drawing rules (the dealer handles this automatically)

You don't control or choose whether a third card is drawn — that's determined by the game's fixed rules. Your only decision is which hand to bet on before the round begins.

The Three Bets and Their House Edges

Banker1:1 (minus 5% commission)~1.06%Best bet at the table
Player1:1~1.24%Good alternative
Tie8:1~14.4%Generally avoid

The Banker bet is statistically the best wager in baccarat due to the drawing rules slightly favouring the Banker hand. The 5% commission paid on Banker wins accounts for this advantage. Even after the commission, the Banker bet has a lower house edge than the Player bet.

The Tie bet might be tempting at 8:1 odds, but the house edge of around 14% makes it a poor long-term choice.

Baccarat Variations You'll Encounter

Punto Banco

The most common version worldwide. Purely luck-based, the casino banks the game at all times. This is what most online casinos offer.

Mini Baccarat

Played on a smaller table with lower minimum bets. Faster pace, ideal for newcomers wanting to try the game without high stakes.

Live Dealer Baccarat

Online baccarat streamed from a real studio with a live dealer. Popular for the atmosphere it creates without requiring a visit to a physical casino.

Why Baccarat Is So Popular in Asia

Baccarat dominates casino revenue in Macau and is hugely popular across Southeast Asia. Several cultural factors contribute:

  • The number 8 and 9 are considered lucky in Chinese culture — and 9 is the best possible hand in baccarat
  • The game's simplicity aligns with a preference for fate over complex decision-making
  • Squeezing cards (a ritual allowed in some versions) adds drama and engagement
  • Social aspects of baccarat rooms in VIP areas create a community feel

Tips for Playing Baccarat

  • Stick to Banker bets for the best statistical outcome
  • Ignore scorecards and trends — each hand is independent, past results don't predict future ones
  • Set a session budget before you start and stick to it
  • Avoid Tie bets unless you understand the risk and are betting purely for entertainment

Baccarat's elegance lies in its simplicity. It's one of the few casino games where understanding the rules completely takes about five minutes, yet it remains endlessly entertaining.
